Risa Hayase
Japan-born performer, actress, and live streamer
Risa Hayase is a Japan-born performer, actress, and live streamer currently based in California. Trained in both stage and film, she is known for portraying emotional subtlety and psychological depth, blending the quiet precision of Japanese sensibility with the bold expressiveness she has cultivated in the United States.
In addition to acting, Risa independently produces and performs in original film projects that explore human vulnerability and inner conflict. She has also built a community of over 15,000 followers on TikTok through daily live performances centered on real-time interaction, improvisation, and emotional responsiveness. Working across film, live performance, and digital platforms, Risa continues to develop cross-cultural storytelling that resonates with global audiences. What is your area of expertise as a performer? RH: I specialize in both acting in film and video productions and performing live on digital platforms.
In movies and other visual works, I take on central characters and carefully explore their inner lives, striving for performances that allow audiences to emotionally connect and empathize. At the same time, on digital platforms such as TikTok, I perform live, engaging with audiences in real time while delivering storytelling-driven performances.
Navigating both the film and digital domains, I leverage the unique strengths of each medium, which defines my work as a cross-platform performer.
What roles and responsibilities did you take on as a lead actor? RH: In the projects where I have played the lead role, the story often centers on human drama—for instance, a narrative in which a close friend and I, once pursuing the same dreams, choose different paths and face separation. These works explore unavoidable life experiences such as encounters and farewells, as well as the beauty and poignancy of friendship. As the lead, I carried the emotional center of the story, delivering nuanced and convincing performances that audiences could relate to through their own experiences.
Through such projects, I aim to help audiences process emotions that may remain unexpressed in their daily lives. What sets your acting or performance apart? RH: I grew up in a rural region of Japan, surrounded by nature, where I cultivated sensitivity and attention to subtle emotional cues. After moving to the United States, I was exposed to diverse perspectives and expressive styles, which helped me develop a more bold and dynamic range. This duality—sensitivity and boldness—forms the core of my performances. The ability to navigate contrasts such as stillness and movement, introspection and release, and integrate them into a unified physical expression is a central strength of mine. You won first place in a TikTok agency event. Could you tell us about the scale and competition? RH: The event included over 50 participants, including top creators from within the agency, some of whom had been recognized in official TikTok events such as Live Fest.
During the two-week event, I earned over 4 million points, surpassing the second-place participant by more than 1 million points, ultimately winning first place. I was also recognized at the event held in Hollywood. I view this achievement as the result of the support of many people, and it has been a significant source of encouragement for me. How has your success on digital platforms influenced your career? RH: While film and video productions do not allow direct audience feedback, live streaming provides immediate responses. One of the reasons I perform is to move people emotionally, and digital platforms allow me to witness that impact in real time. Audience support and feedback serve as a driving force for me, inspiring me to continue creating and to push my performances to a higher level.
Which countries or regions does your audience primarily come from? RH: My work reaches viewers worldwide through TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. In live streams, the majority of my audience is English-speaking, primarily in the United States, with approximately 90% of my TikTok followers based in the U.S. Many of these viewers are drawn not only by an interest in Japanese culture but also by my journey as someone navigating a different cultural background while living and working in the U.S., fostering cross-cultural empathy. What is the significance of being based in the United States for your work? RH: A significant portion of my audience is located in the United States, and the U.S. represents the largest entertainment market in the world. By combining the sensitivity developed through my Japanese heritage with the bold, expressive skills I cultivated in the U.S., along with fluency in English, I am able to create performances that resonate across cultures.
Working in this larger market is essential for expanding my impact and contributing socially through my work. What projects do you plan to pursue in the U.S. going forward? RH: I aim to continue participating in projects centered on human drama. Specifically, I wish to engage in works that explore themes resonating across languages and cultures—such as emotions that are difficult to express and struggles related to identity. I also hope to leverage my perspective as an Asian performer to contribute to the promotion of diversity within the entertainment industry.

What is your ultimate vision and contribution to the industry? RH: I aspire not only to act but also to build a sustainable model of creation as a performer with a digital platform. Many actors depend on casting opportunities, which can make their careers unstable. However, by maintaining a direct connection with a digital audience, I can create and share work independently while reaching wide audiences.
Ultimately, I aim to integrate my projects with social media to ensure that everyone involved in a production can continue creating in a stable and sustainable way. This is the contribution I hope to make to the industry.
