VOLUME N°5
Wanying Jin
“I can not remember when I started to paint, however, for as long as I can remember, I have been drawing almost every day. I carry a little sketchbook with me all the time for inspiration”.
Born in Harbin, Wanying Jin is an artist and illustrator now based in Shenzhen, China. In Jin’s portraits, she explores how elegance can be reinterpreted in the contemporary era. The unorthodox figures are dreamlike characters that float from another realm Jin holds a connection with. Ambiguous in gender, race, or bone structure, these characters have no interest in the labels that separate people from each other in this realm. They convey their own stories with distinct personalities. Rather than originate these characters, Jin regards her job as an artist to bring them to our dimension with paint, fabric, and make-up.
They convey their own stories with distinct personalities. Rather than originate these characters, Jin regards her job as an artist to bring them to our dimension with paint, fabric, and make-up. For Jin, the most exciting aspect of this process is to figure out the style of each character, which is the moment when they come to life. Before becoming a painter, Jin was first a fashion illustrator. She received her M.A. degree in Illustration from Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester, England, and holds a B.A. in Illustration from Arts University of Bournemouth, Poole, England.

In Genesis 1, God instructed humans to ‘rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and overall the creatures that move along the ground’, and to ‘fill the earth and subdue it (Genesis 1:26, 28). Some people believe that the instruction to ‘rule’ over the earth means we have absolute authority over creation. In this view, nature is a resource for humans to benefit from economically, whatever the environmental impacts.
When we forget our responsibility to be wise stewards, creation groans. The earth can no longer cope with the demands humans place on our natural resources. Our waste and pollution are poisoning the air, soil, and water. If we continue to exploit and abuse God’s earth, what will be left for future generations to inherit?
The climate crisis is here, and it demands urgent action from all of us.
